Michael J. Bornell, Sr.

Michael J. Bornell Sr., 71, of La Porte, Indiana, passed away on Saturday, September 9, 2023 at his home. 

Michael was born in Chicago, IL, on April 23, 1952 to Robert and Kathryne Boyaris Bornell. 

He enjoyed over 20 years of marriage to Mary Scarborough who preceded him in death. Surviving Michael are his 3 sons, Robert (Loree) Bornell, Phillip (Kelsie Schutz) Bornell, and Michael (Christina) Bornell Jr, all of La Porte; stepson, Steven (Linda) Palmer of Rolling Prairie; brother, Stephen (Ellen) A. Bornell of Buchanan, MI; 8 grandchildren; and 1 niece.

He was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Mary Ann Bornell. 

Michael began his USPS carrier career in 1971, retiring in 2007.  He spent many years coaching Little League and prep baseball in La Porte.  Michael will be fondly remembered for his generous heart, desiring to create memories, not only for his sons, but also for other children in the neighborhood by taking them to Wrigley Field to enjoy baseball games.  Daily, Michael enjoyed going to Al's Coffee Bar where he'd meet friends and talk with anyone that wanted to talk sports.

Cremation has taken place with Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, La Porte. 

A Celebration of Life Memorial Gathering will be held from 12 - 3 p.m. on Saturday, September 16, 2023, at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center.   At a later date, a private inurnment will take place at Union Mills Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the charity of the donor's choice.
